The history of Agadir, Morocco is very important especially in the year 1960 when a terrible earthquake left the city in ruins. This year King Hassan did everything possible to help this city pick up from the terrible tragedy. During the reconstruction in the 60's, Agadir was converted into a point of reference in the country. Its sun, beaches and possibilities, turned it into what is now a preferred destination in Morocco. It is a city were fishing and agriculture have a large importance in the economy. It is a modern city that has become very westernized, dynamic, and fun.
But before the great Agadir Earthquake, very interesting episodes in history have passed through here. The original inhabitants of this place were the Berbers, who from the 7th century suffered the invasions of the Phoenicians, the Cartagineans, the Romans, the Vandals, and the Byzantines, along with the Portuguese, Spanish and French in modern days. But all of these invasions have not stood the test of time, and still the Berber hold their own language in these lands.
In 1500, the Portuguese founded the city. These were moments of prosperity under Portuguese rule. Later, at the beginnings of the 20th century, Agadir almost converted into the initial start of WWI, through the crisis of Agadir, instigated by the French and Germans after provocation.
Morocco has always been dominated by European countries historically, at least in part.. Portuguese, German, French, Spanish... In the 20th century, the situation was very tense because of the colonial wars of the European Powers, wars that began with the independence of Agadir from its colonists, and passing to form part of, in 1956, the Sovereignty of Morocco. |
